Deadly New York Limo Crash Goes to Trial

January 2023 got off to a rough start for 20 people in Manhattan. They were all injured due to the negligence of an Audi driver who smashed into another vehicle while allegedly speeding. Among the victims were an 11-year-old, a 1-year-old, and one other child. It was a miracle that no one was killed. Recently, it was reported that this driver is finally facing a trial for his actions, having been indicted in May of 2023

Around the same time, the operator of a limousine company headed to trial for his role in one of the deadliest crashes in recent memory. The crash claimed 20 lives, including the driver, 17 occupants, and two bystanders. But will these two trials really provide a sense of justice and closure for the victims? That remains to be seen.

The Circumstances of the Crash

In October 2018, a limousine packed with partiers was speeding around rural upstate New York. The limousine apparently pulled out of a gas station at high speed, impacting an Uber driver before crashing down a hill and off the road. The limousine struck two bystanders on the way, killing both.

Family members say that the limousine company failed to properly maintain the vehicle, that the limo did not have enough braking capacity, and that it was carrying a load heavier than it was built for. Initially, the operator of the limousine entered a plea deal and received 1,000 hours of community service. But a judge then rejected the deal, causing the operator to withdraw his plea. Now the case is going to trial.

But the family members admit that even if they achieve a positive result in the criminal trial, it won't change what happened. A father who lost four daughters in the crash stated:

"It's not going to be closure for families that lost their kids. I mean, we lost four daughters and three sons-in-law in one shot. There's no way we'll ever make that up, no matter how many trials they have."

Driver Indicted for Horrific Audi Crash

According to NBC New York, a driver who pulled out of a Manhattan gas station at high speed before hitting an Uber vehicle and several victims has now been indicted. The crash left an 11-year-old with an amputated leg and a 1-year-old with a broken foot. The driver is now being charged with 10 counts of third-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and many other traffic violations.
