Escalator Fire Causes Numerous Injuries in New York

Although escalator fires are relatively rare in the modern era, these accidents do happen in New York from time to time. The latest incident of this nature occurred at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and it injured nine people. If you have experienced an escalator accident in New York, you already know how traumatic and life-altering these incidents can be. How did this happen in the modern era? What went wrong? More importantly, how will the victims pursue the compensation they need to deal with fire-related injuries?

Nine People Injured After Escalator Catches Fire in New York Airport

In July of 2024, it was reported that nine people had suffered “minor injuries” after an escalator caught fire at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Aside from the nine injured individuals, 900 additional travelers were evacuated from Terminal 8. The area filled with smoke, causing respiratory issues and safety concerns.

Four of the injured people were hospitalized, suggesting their health issues may have been more serious compared to the other five. Authorities revealed very little additional information in the aftermath of the accident, and it was not immediately clear what caused the blaze.

We can only speculate while the investigation continues, but this fire may have been caused by some kind of mechanical issue. If this is the case, then one has to wonder whether the escalator was properly maintained. “Freak accidents” are relatively rare, and most accidents of this nature are wholly or partially connected with negligence.

What Should I Do After an Escalator Fire in New York?

If you were affected by an escalator fire in New York, you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. If you fail to seek medical attention, it might be difficult to prove that your injuries are legitimate. With no medical record of these injuries, property owners and their insurers could argue that they never occurred. Remember, smoke inhalation may be worse than you realize. See a doctor just to be on the safe side.

Who Can I Sue After an Escalator Accident?

An escalator accident represents a type of premise liability lawsuit. In other words, you will need to sue the property owner. In doing so, you will also need to prove that the property owner was negligent. You may need to establish that the property owner failed to properly maintain the escalator – and this is something your lawyer can help with.
