New York Restaurant Owner Dies After Being Struck by e-Bike

By now, most New Yorkers are aware that e-Bikes can be incredibly dangerous. Although these vehicles may not be particularly fast or heavy, they have the potential to cause incredible damage to the public. In some cases, these vehicles can even cause deaths. All of this became painfully clear to the family of a restaurant manager in New York city who was struck and killed by an e-Bike rider in mid-April of 2021. This raises serious questions about the safety of these vehicles in New York.

If you have been injured by an e-Bike rider in New York, you may have the ability to file a personal injury claim and recover compensation for your damages. These injuries can be life-threatening in certain situations, and you may be dealing with significant medical expenses. If you are serious about taking legal action, your best bet is to connect with an experienced, qualified personal injury attorney in New York. Our seasoned professionals can help you approach this situation in the most effective manner.

Another Individual Dies Due to an E-Bike Rider

On April 17th, restaurant manager Hing Chung stepped into a bike lane on the Upper East Side. He probably did not expect to see an e-Bike hurtling towards him at full speed, but it was too late to avoid the vehicle after he entered the bike lane. Chung was struck by the e-Bike rider and suffered serious head and arm injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but it soon became clear that he would not survive. He was pronounced dead not long afterwards.

The e-Bike rider remained at the scene of the crash, and he was later allowed to leave without being charged. Statistics show that e-Bike riders have been responsible for three deaths since the beginning of 2014. While this is obviously a much lower number than the amount of pedestrians killed by cars each year, it is still noteworthy. As e-Bikes become more popular, this number could rise significantly.

E-Bike Riders are at Risk, Too

Pedestrians are not the only ones at risk here. There are also serious questions being asked about the safety of e-Bikes for those riding them. Not long after the aforementioned restaurant owner passed away, a deliveryman on an e-Bike was killed in Queens after a collision with another vehicle. These e-Bikes offer virtually zero protection against impact, and yet they are often capable of traveling at similar speeds as normal road vehicles.
